The imposing King John’s Castle is one of Europe’s best preserved Norman Castles and its fortress is a signature to the landscape of Limerick. With a story that spans more than 800 years, the castle has witnessed signature events that have shaped both modern Ireland and Limerick City. During the 1990’s this rich history was unearthed as extensive archaeological digs revealed foundations of the lost wall, evidence of pre-Norman houses and earlier features dating back to the 9th century.
These discoveries can be visited and explored along with the history of Ireland in a beautifully appointed exhibition and visitor centre space with state-of-the-art interpretation activities ranging from 21st century touch screen technology to 3D models that put you right into the heart of fascinating tales about sieges and warfare. On this must-do experience in Limerick City experience, there is even an opportunity to climb the turrets and absorb the imposing views of the entire county.
